If there is nothing else wrong with the transmisssion, I think I would just replace the seal. Without looking at the car, I don't know how hard it is to get to, but sometimes if you can't get to it from the top, you can remove the pan and valve body and push the old seal out from the bottom. Keep in mind, there was nothing really wrong with these transmissions, they were really one of the better designs of their day. Parts are a little harder to find for them now, and a little more expensive. If you rebuild this transmission properly and don't subject it to unrealistic abuse it will likely outsurvive you.
