I had a '56 277 with a 2-speed PowerFlite, and it was decently quick, especially after about 45 mph. I also had a '58 Plymouth wagon with a 318, 2-speed. It was pretty slow, but was also heavy.
The Poly engine has good performance for the displacement and is economical, but there is not much performance equipment available. The PowerFlite is not the way to go if you want performance. If I was doing it, I would convert to a TorqueFlite and use a poly 318 with a modern 4-bbl, dual exhausts and a mild cam. It wouldn't be a drag racer, but it wouldn't be a slouch either.
