Well it sounds like the 340 block is stock bore... The 904 is a very good transmission overall,I know a few people who use them behind big blocks because they are lighter and use less horsepower than the 727 (the 904 uses about 20 hp and the 727 use about 50 hp). A properly rebuilt 904 holds up very well behind a street big block,much less a street small block. I'd use it!
