If the crank main bolt won't thread then the pulley hub is probably not seated all the way on the shaft. I had the same problem with my Desoto. I thought the hub was all the way in based on the grease marks but the bolt wouldn't thread. did you use a vibration damper installer? if not Autozone rents them (free!). mine was a bear to install but after a lot of cuts and bruises I was able to muscle it on. Don't use a mallet as this could damage the crank or bearings.
