I would check the simplest things first rather than tear apart the engine. Check the distributer cap for cracks. Look for any wear or cracks on the plug wires. Also how old are the contacts and condensor? Also be sure your generator is charging properly. Low battery voltage can cause a miss or backfire especially on older point type ignition systems.
