I've seen both good and bad examples of this repair, it is possible. The biggest things are to get a good weld, followed by grinding and sanding the part back to a perfect finish prior to rechroming. Any imperfections will be magnified by the chrome. I'd suggest that you contact the chrome shops and see if they can do the repair in house or if they have someone they recommend. Also ask to see examples of their work if possible.
