On Rottela, I'd heard they'd started dropping the ZDDP in it a few years ago. May have cost me a cam and a $1,000 so I just moved on to known products. A synthetic oil will appropriate ZDDP in the formula for flat-tappet cams is superior to any conventional oil in the realm of lubricity, asphaltene absorption, high temperature tolerance, and wear-protection of internal engine parts. That being said, any conventional oil with a ZDDP additive is fine for most all HP engines, flat-tappet or roller, but for those 500+ builds, a synthetic in the proper weight will be the best choice. Gents,
I'm sure this has been beaten to death over the years. But I'll open the can of worms anyway. A friend who just got a 1968 Z28 asked my opinion and I myself have different notions in my own head, but it's a relevant question for our old cars.
What do you use for oil in an older high performance engine? I use synthetic with a Zinc additive. But who says I'm right? I've heard Rotella and other things as well. I'm interested in your opinions.
Thanks.
