Replace Inline Trans Filter

My 63 Belvedere still has the inline trans filter.  This is a 4 door poly powered cruiser so originality is not a big concern, but cost is.

I can find NOS replacements on ebay for $100+ but quality is always unknown.

Or should I replace with an external like this from summit for $45

Has anyone just replaced the screen with a filter in pre-1964 727?  allpar says you need a deeper pan.
