BTW I have completed half of the rewiring under the hood of my '63
SF. I have the loom that feeds the head lights yet to do. The most
noticeable difference was that my horns actually can be heard now. I
also changed the dash lighting to LED's, which made a big difference. I
was at a loss of how to handle the bulkhead issue. So since I'm too
fat and inflexible to get under the dash to do much rewiring there I
cleaned those connections and spliced into those wire @ 6" from the
firewall. I have soldered all of the connections and used all new spade
connectors, which are also soldered.
At the same time I have
eliminated the amp meter and the fire hazard posed by that wiring.
Although mine showed no evidence of excessive heat. I plan to add a
voltmeter in it's place some time this summer.
I've only
had one issue, which I haven't solved yet. My tach quit working. The
only wire that I did anything with was the wire that goes to the (-)
side of the coil, which was replaced. Now with the engine at Idle it
will show approximately the correct reading. But as soon as you rev the
engine it drops to zero. So I'm thinking that maybe I've disturbed the
ground wire, which is under the dash somewhere. I may work on that a
little today.

While I'm working on my dash and bulkhead connector wiring. I'd like to improve the dash light illumination. Mine is so poor I can barely read the gauges at night. I replaced the rheostat a few years ago. Not sure of the quality as there are dead spots in it while turning it trying to find the best setting. But have any of you upgraded the dash bulbs? Are the LED's available. I plan to check for all of the usual culprits like bad grounds or low voltage etc. And speaking of voltage, do I remember correctly that the voltage from the dash voltage regulator is 5 volts?
