Re: Pertronix III Ignitor

If you were using it before then you still need the vacuum advance. The Pertronix doesn't control timing. That's still up to the weights and springs in your distributor (mechanical advance) and the vacuum advance. That said, some people tune their engines to use only the mechanical advance and do not also use the vacuum advance. The Pertronix doesn't know nor care. It makes sparks when it sees the pickup, and the position of your distributor, the mechanical advance, and the vacuum advance determine where it sees the pickup relative to TDC.

I just replaced the points in my '65 383 dual-point distributor with a Pertronix III Ignitor (also got their flame thrower coil) and can't find any info on whether or not I still need the vacuum advance hooked up. I haven't gotten a reply to my questions from their tech dept. Wondering if anyone here knows. Bill
