Re: hard starting 440

I used a block off plate for a 350 Chevy. It's a pretty generic thing. You can make your own too. The pump will be your choice. Noise will be an issue with some more than others. A fuel pressure regulator will be needed if the pump delivers to much pressure for your carb. Edelbrock can't handle more than 6.5 psi and I wouldn't go that high. I run about 5 and it works fine. Some pumps require a return line I believe while others don't. They need to be installed near the tank and as low as possible. They don't pull fuel well. They are pushers. I have used Holley Red and Blue. The street model seemed even noisier than the race model. The brushes burned up on a Mallory pump during my Route 66 trip. It was much quieter than the Holley but I believed they are discontinued and no repair lots are available any longer. I used a cheap Mr Gasket pump to complete the trip and it did ok. I keep it in my trunk as a spare now. I had replaced the Holley's just due to the noise. I put in a ticket switch to turn on the pump manually to prime the carb and a oil pressure kill switch in parallel to cut power to the pump if the oil pressure dies. I believe there is a pump made by Carter that had been the standard one to use but I didn't think across any. Good luck. It's worth the effort.

A week or 2 ago, there was a discussion about hard starting and electric fuel pumps. My 440 is hard to start if I don't get to it in 3 or 4 weeks. A few questions. What would be the best electric fuel pump to use-do you block off the stock mechanical pump and if so, how-and do you need to run a fuel pressure regulator? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
