Cool! Thanks for that...always wondered about it!

Bill,

The “top end” is the same and the only difference between Hyd. and Solid Rocker assemblies is the “solid” rocker arm has the threaded hole with adjuster installed; the hyd. rocker arm is cast with a ball on the pushrod end and no threaded hole to adjust travel of the ball.

Gary,

Would you happen to have a photo or drawing of the hydraulic poly top end setup? I'm guessing it's basically an LA rocker arm setup on adjustable poly rocker shafts?

Hank,

The heads with adjustable rocker arms are used with solid lifter cam Poly engines and the non-adjustable heads are factory head for the Hydraulic Poly Cam engines.  Most, if not all, of the “heavy duty” truck models (ie your W500) came with Hyd. cams and non-adjustable rocker heads.

Many of the Canadian Poly psgr. car engines and trucks came with non-adjustable rocker assemblies and Hyd. camshafts from the factory; ie like the Canadian 1967 Plymouth VIP of Kevin Merkley.
And here we have another twist in that 318 Poly psgr. car engines were limited to the 1966 model year in the U.S. (with some 1967 heavy duty trucks and TRAVCO motor homes still built with Polys in the U.S. just to confuse some parts people and unsuspecting Poly owners) but continued through the 1967 model year in Canada.

The first and only 318 Poly passenger car to receive a Hyd. Camshaft and non-adjustable rocker gear was the 1959 Dodge...which was an overbored 318 Plymouth Poly topping out at 326 cubic inches. All following model year Dodges were installed with the standard 318 throughout the Poly production run.

It is always good to use the adjustable rocker assembly with Poly Hyd. cam motors (ease of maintenance & ability to set proper lifter pre-load...) and mandatory of course with solid lifter motors.

No such animal as adjustable pushrod Poly engines.

Subject: 318 Poly Valve Train Question

Hello!

New poster, longtime lurker.  I am from the Power Wagon side of things, I have 3 trucks, a 1956 flatfender, a 1961 2 ton (W500), and a 1964 W200.  I am working on assembling a 318 Poly for the W500.  The engine that I have came with two sets of heads: one had adjustable rocker arms, the other doesn't.  I have heard a lot of explanations for this, including adjustable push rods, and the rare long lost Canadian hydraulic lifter model of the 318 Poly.  My intention is to reassemble with the adjustable rocker arms, but can anybody tell me where these non-adjustable rocker arms came from?

Thanks!

Hank
