Thank you Mike. Good information. It would seem that most all
methods/lubricants will work and that the only caveats are to not lube the cable
5-8” from the speedo head to prevent one’s choice of lubricant from gumming-up
the speedometer. Constant lubrication is needed without draining to the
bottom of the trans input or draining into the speedometer gearing. A high
viscosity lubricant (thick/resistant to migrating – i.e. vaseline,...) that will
not migrate, retain lubricity, and resistant to attracting contaminants/moisture
over time and in different weather/thermal conditions which is why dry graphite
lubricants are often recommended. Given modern chemicals, there are a
variety of suitable speedo lube products available; graphite or Mike’s Mopar
Speedometer Lubricant appeal to me.
Additionally, it is easy to apply your choice of speedo lubricant if the
cable is out of the car by removing the inner coil and lubricating as per Mike’s
method. If one is performing “maintenance” of the speedo cable
after a long period of use then some of the less viscous products mentioned
in this thread would perhaps be easier and more effective if the cable was
“gummed-up” with debris then use of the type of flushing lubricant mentioned
would be useful.
Thanks again,
Gary P.

Subject: Re: NOS 1965 speedo cable Ok fellas and gal,
I've been watching this discussion and finally decided to add my 2 cents. I
have always used Chrysler speedo lube and the attached photos are of a tube from
the 70s. I like to fill the top end of the cable housing with lube and then
insert the cable while twisting and swirling through the lube which will drag
the lube into the housing. Stop adding lube about 8" from full insertion.
