Re: A745 transmissions - were any carried over from 1961?

My interchange book says the following

std. duty...interchange

Plym, '60 6 cyl 2125212 std duty
Dodge '60-'61 6 cyl pass
Plym '60-'61 6 cyl

Hvy duty...interchange

2204472

Dodge '61 6 cyl Pass
Plym '61 cyl
Note: Identify H.D. by raised portion on top cover

The following will interchange by switching the M. D. G. (Main Drive Gear or Clutch Shaft)

2124768 or 2400238

Chrysler '61 Newport
Chrysler '62 Newport and 300
DeSoto '61
Dodge Pass '61 8 cyl
Dodge Pass '62 880 ser.

I hope this helps

A friend of mine... well, he's a friend since he found me and I started to help him out with his transmission problem... has a '61 Dart Phoenix, a real fireball of a car fitted with a 225 Slant 6 and a 3-speed manual transmission.

The 3-speed is an A903, the 'light duty' unit. And he's broken first gear. He acquired an A903 from a Valiant and tried to fit components from it but found some variation which meant those parts couldn't be fitted. As the Valiant box was from a '65 model, it seems there were some running changes in production.

It would seem that the best option is to find a complete A745 to suit that model. But there are traps.

These would have been fitted to taxis and police cars in 1961 behind Slant 6s, also behind 318s. A745s were fitted behind big blocks as well, but it's probable that these had unsuitable ratios for fitment behind a Slant 6.

What I don't know, and am asking here, is whether or not the same transmissions were fitted to any '62 models, with the 880 being a possibility and maybe any lower-range Chryslers.

The key is whether or not these cars had the parking brake on the transmission or in the rear drums. Can anyone enlighten me on this?

For reference, I am posting some photos here... the first is the A903 from a '61 Plymouth, this is the present unit and at a pinch just fitting one of these would do the job for him. Note the long input shaft (about 10" from the front of the gearcase) and the drum brake on the rear.

The second pic is an A745, in particular the easiest distinguishing feature between the 903 and 745, the hump over the 2nd/3rd selectors.
