I had several reasons for similar issues in the past. Once my car would die out and/or run raggedy about the time I would start to stage and just generally. This turned out to be my mechanical Holley fuel pump. One of the two check valves in it came loose and was flipping around on top of the diaphragm. Another time I lost the ground on a Holley Blue electric pump. I also had a big issue with my Accel coil as I had it mounted on the firewall at about s 45 deg down angle. It would heat up pretty rapidly and fail until it cooled down. An old-timer set me straight that issue and mounting it vertically cured that problem. It seems that not all coils have this issue though. I also had a big problem when my wire loom was bad and the voltage to the ignition system was all over the place. Also I ran without the ballast resistor just for racing but to long a period this way would again cause the coil to overheat and fail. I have two resistors on my firewall. One is .25 and the other is .84 ohms. I used the .25 for the track and the other for daily driving. And of course don't rule out carb/fuel overheating. That's where ditching the aluminum swirl torque spacer for a wooden spacer reduced my carb fuel bowl temp from 180 to 110 deg!!! If you are using a mechanical pump it's a big help to make a heat shield for it as Don Dulmage told us.
Also I had my first electric pump mounted just ahead of the tank on the underside of the floor of the trunk
This did work ok but I did move it to the frame rail in front of the truck wheel and lower in relation to the tank.
So it's pretty obvious there are quite a few possibilities.
--Wasn't this the same problem you had before? Engine wont rpm etc. Is your tach good? Try disconnecting it could be shorting out your ignition. In my opinion which im sure ill be told is wrong. You dont havr enough compression with the aluminum heads. Did you deck the block and set the quench area correctly. Use the 850 a good 1 inch spacer and a team G 7534. Just out of curiosity where is the intake valve close at 50?Sent from Samsung Mobile.-------- Original message --------From: Donald GallimoreDate:07/09/2016 8:32 AM (GMT-05:00)Subject: Re: Drag Strip Failure Help Needed--It's a 440 with an 800 cfm Edelbrock (NSS rules). Subject: Drag Strip Failure Help NeededI can’t make a good run at the strip. Symptom is surging
from the almost from the time I leave the line and won’t run past 3-3,500 rpm
or so. Fuel pressure drops from the recommended 6.5 to 3.5 psi. Engine will usually
cut off down track like it’s out of fuel. I can eventually restart it.
Sometimes it runs enough to get me off the track, again, at the reduced rpm,
other times, it stalls out again and can’t be restarted till I get back to the pits.
This engine and carb made 500 HP on an engine dyno and hasn’t been messed with
since then.I gone completely though the 3/8” fuel system from the
pickup to the regulator. Was pumping 100 gph out of the pump, 80 gph just
before the regulator and 45 gph at the carb – I upgraded the regulator as a result
of that to no avail. I added filters 9 a 100 micron filter before the pump and
a 40 micron before the regulator. We did notice that the electric fuel regulator would take 30
seconds or so to get to full pressure or 6.5 psi and did it in spurts. The mechanical
gauge on the regulator was very slow to react. Based on that, our guess at this time is that the Carter P4600 fuel pump is
worn out. The fuel pump I don’t have a spare and I’m hesitant to throw money at the thing and buy another pump without some more rational reason. We also think that the carb needs rebuilt/replaced. I have a 750cfm Edelbrock
and an 850cfm AED Holley that we will try next time.Any ideas ?Akron Don Gallimore------Please address private email -- email of interest to only one person -- directly to that person.
