Sounds like cruse control might be stuck engaged. It is flooring it to get up to the speed it wants to go.

As you mentioned, the kickdown lever could be suspect. Just pry it off of the little ball joint connector and work it by hand.
Another thought might be a stuck fast Idle cam on the carb. Good luck, and keep us posted.
