Stopping at the crank grinder’s yesterday, he explained it that the ‘hardening’ process was used for 3 different ‘theories’ on strength and durability… He will do a complete dissertation for the next issue of Chrysler Power but essentially the ‘cast’ cranks have no real ability to receive the nitride in contrast to the forged cranks which do receive much better… The process also costs about $250… The issue is the strength and it’s the filets that are more critical to prevent cracking and breaking… The ‘undercut’ filets found on most all cranks is a ‘rolling’ process which compacts the grain on each side of the journal… When you have to cut the journals in such a process as making the 360 crank fit in the 318-340, that rolled undercut is gone so a tapered filet is ground in necessitating a chamfer in the bearings to accommodate the new condiguration… Old school tech from the original 426 HEMI days … and we’ll get more in depth as we do this build in CP… bottom line is that the hardening or non hardening has little effect if the bearings are riding on oil like they should… From: 1962to1965mopars@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:1962to1965mopars@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Ray Bell I don't think they have a hard surface... It was a big deal in Australia for the trucks that they induction hardened the journals on their 318s, that indicates that there is no hardening for the car journals. We had one bloke do a 360 Poly here, but he used a 360 bottom end and grafted the Poly heads onto it. It took some work. Ray
This brings to mind a question I should know ( excuse , I cannot start a new thread) When a crank is turned down more than .010, doesn't that take off the hard surfacing? All kinds of stock stroked cranks these days. Doesn't that make them weaker? MO -- -- -- Please address private email -- email of interest to only one person -- directly to that person.
