Isn't the station wagon gas tank different, i.e., side mounted? If so then there would be no obstruction issue below for the regular passenger car style exhaust.
I figure the factory had to spend some extra time and money to manufacture the side exit exhaust on the wagons. So they did it for a good reason. Safety sounds like such a reason. Dos pennies.
