Re: brake fluid?

Hi Herb,

Thank you for your response. I was advised by the company that I’m getting new brake lines from to go with DOT-4 as well. I’m a little cautious with older seals and such  relative to making sure that newer  fluids will not end up damaging anything.

Regards,
Fred

DOT-4

If DOT-5 was that great all the manufactures would be using it?  The ONLY reason the Government uses it is the adverse conditions a vehicle might be subjected to day to day.  You might have a vehicle in the arctic today and in Afghanistan tomorrow.  and I doubt you will be running a nascar race anytime soon.

Don't get pulled down the DOT-5 slippery slope, the two are NOT compatible, if you switch, and you can, it will be very expensive to go back.  3, 2, 1, let the opinions begin.   I twisted wrenches for the Government & Military, we converted all our vehicles to DOT-5 back in the day, with little to no issues.  BUT, when we did have a problem child, and we had several, it entailed a new master, calipers & wheel cylinders to start.  And the moisture in the fluid malarkey, is way over blown if you change your fluid every 30 to 40 thousand miles like your supposed to, you will be trouble free with DOT-4.  DOT-4 absorbs moisture and holds it in suspension and DOT-5 will not, so the moisture collects in the low spots of your brake system.  Did someone say rusting inside out?  You WILL get moisture in your system no matter what kind of fluid you use.  BTW the Government stopped converting to DOT-5 some time ago because the negatives out weighed the positives.  If the two get commingled by accident, you will end up with a lump of sludge in your system.  I could go on, but I want to keep it simple

My 2¢, GO!

Subject: brake fluid?

New member Fred (1965 Coronet 500) asked a question in his introduction. I am posting it now as a separate topic to better keep track of the discussion.
Thanks,
Gary H.

Fred's question:  I'm in the process of getting ready to flush the brake system and would like to get an idea of what type of brake fluid I should use that will not affect the old style master cylinder etc.?
