Yes they are 1.5" wider at the valve covers
From what I understand...overall width of the engine to the edges of the valve covers...Poly's are WIDER than a 440.--

I am a big block guy, but a firm believer in the early and later 318 as being an excellent engine. This weekend a person was telling me that he was going to ditch his " big block" 318 and go to a larger engine. I asked him if he was aware that there were amazing things being done to the early 318 poly head these days. He said no. I told him of the popularity of building a poly these days that makes power like he wouldn't believe--without having a rev. radical. I also told him not to junk his wide block 318 as they will become more valuable as people learn about what is now being done. Save those engines!!!!........................MO .
