Sounds like the engine ground was weak, causing the alternator's
reference to be off from that of the voltage regulator which
resulted in overcharging your battery. Now that you've fixed the grounding, the regulator is working properly and the battery is slowly discharging back down to it's normal operating point. Since you didn't complain about the starter being weak, I suspect your negative battery cable goes right to the block, like it should.
