Hemi 6

With all the talk about slant 6's a few months back I thought the group might be interested in an engine Chrysler installed in its Australian Valiant takeoff, the Pacer. This is from the February 2015 Collectible Automobile.
In addition to a 225 slant 6 Chrysler, from 1969-1971 a 245 ci Hemi 6 was made available. The magazine says that "the valves were splayed slightly away from each other along the engine's longitudinal axis, creating a shallow semispherical combustion chamber." It had 198 HP with a 2-barrel Carter and 9.5:1 compression ratio. It was an upright engine but apparently had an intake manifold similar to the 225. A slight bump up in HP was available with the optional 4-barrel Carter. Later on a 265 ci Hemi 6 was made available although HP did not increase much. Wouldn't it have been terrific if these engines had been options on American Mopars!
Interestingly, Australia had a strict minimum domestic content requirement, which meant the cars were stuck with a 3-speed manual transmission, which hurt off-the-line acceleration. Even so one magazine tested the car 0-60 mph at 8.1 seconds. Maybe one of our Australian members can add some more to this discussion. Bob from Maine
