Re: ZDDP Additives

First , you need to use an oil that meets the requirements of your own application. Dis- regard for the moment the ZDDP . I do not believe in high priced raceing or synthetic oils for the street. My problem with synthetic is --leaking thru gaskets. Maybe not a problem on all new gaskets as with a fresh build. Choose your oil and then use a ZDDP additive. ZDDPlus was one of the first products offered. As I understand, you can't have to much ZDDP( within reason) It does "wear out" it's effectivness, so higher amounts will assure protection till time for your next oil changee. One of my thoughts is to choose an oil that is easily obtained. and less expensive. There always is a possibility that you may need to change oil when you are away from your home. Simply carry a bottle or two of your chosen ZDDP additive with you. I have been doing it this way for 8 years with no problem. I just talked to a guy that did not know about ZDDP content and continued with his same old kind of oil. His camshaft wore out way prematurely, and his mechanic told him why it wore the lobes and lifters. Hard lesson to learn...........................MO

Interesting thanks for the link. Had no idea so many high ZDDP oils existed in this day and age.

Shows my go-to oil Rotella T not the best choice.

Amsoil Z-Rod right up there and indeed a good choice. Based on this think I would go with Valvoline VR1 conventional. Highly rated and easy to find on the shelf.

Especially eye opening results when they added ZDDPlus to oils tested. Re-assures my gut feeling that you want to use an oil that is up to the task, and not use additives.

Would like to know the ppm of zink in Amsoil Z-Rod. They state "high-zinc"
but not the ppm that I see.

It seems that the long term trend is for diesel oils like Rotella is less and less ZDDP. So switching to an oil formulated for tappet cars seems like a logical plan. Amsoil’s Z-Rod is one. I think Mobile 1 also still has ZDDP.
There are others.

To open up a can of worms, there is also the argument that using racing oil that has ZDDP in it in a street / collector car is also not a good idea. http://www.cam-shield.com/acatalog/diesel.html has the argument. (Of course note this link is from an additive manufacturer.)
