I replaced 1/3 of the sheet metal on my front bow before I had the top installed.  Took time and patience to cut/bend/fill in each piece, but it can be done.  I top coated it with a metal etch and then some good black primer and paint that matched.  Still no rust showing on the visible parts and vinly 15 years later.
