After pulling them in with the nut and washer setup, I like to give them a 'security' whack on the back with a hammer and one more turn of the wrench, this requires the axle out of course. And then check them after driving for a short distance the first time, which is a good alternative when you don't remove the axle.

As for belting on the bearings, the two good whacks it takes to get them moving shouldn't be a problem, surely?
