Agree that it sounds like the dwell or possibly a condensor that is starting to go bad. 

A few questions...

Do u have the single or dual point setup?  What is your dwell running at?   
Do the edges of the points look black/smoked like they've been arcing?
Are the surfaces of the points clean and smooth?
Are the wire connectors inside the dist solid ?
Is the condensor miscolored or leaking?
What is the point gap measurement?
Are your coil connections solid?
Is coil wire to distributor starting to fray or break?
Have you checked it out, whill running in the dark to see any visinle arcing on the engine?
