Re: 318 Poly refresh time - Cam and gear drive info, please

I  have had 4 cams with my poly so far.  The first was the original one with 2bbl.  Ran fine.

The second was the 264 hot street cam with 2x4's.  It was pretty good but I think a single 4 bbl would've been a little better with it.  Although Michael Harding from Streetlegal TV actually had better numbers with the 2x4's than a single 4bbl with that cam.  His were not carbs but EFI though.

My next cam with the 2x4's included a major re-worked head change along with a 284 cam.  This was awesome!  It had even better street manners than the 264, ran cooler and turned 6/10's quicker 1/8th mile times without any re-tuning.  7500 rpm's was doable and I went there when racing!

My current cam is back with stockish heads and a 2bbl.  This is a 244 hyd cam that is basically stock oriented.  I have a very smooth idle with vacuum numbers that run from 18" to 23".  At an idle it will hold right around the 22-23 mark. Due to trans issues and the typical boo-boo's I encounter it hasn't had much run time yet. I can see this will be a decent driver and probably will get me some good mileage figures. I need to change my rear-end asap from the 3:91's to some 3:23's I have on hand. I did already go back to a stock converter. I still have all the solid lower end block goodies which is a plus.  The Ross pistons that are ceramic and moly coated are a very helpful component.  I think you can figure they help drop the engine operating temp by 10deg at least. I would recommend getting your pistons coated for any use!

I need to give the current 244 cam a chance to show it's stuff but I am sure I will probably move on to a 258deg torque cam in the future.  My wife came up with the idea of using LeRoar as a tow vehicle for a small week-ender trailer.  Hmmm, sounds good to me!

All my cams I got from Gary P and are made by Schneider. They "tweaked" the 284deg cam for me and gave it a little more lift.  It was my favorite for sure!!!!!

Have fun with your projects!

Also very interested in the perfect 318 Poly cam for a single 4bbl.  A little rumble and MPG being on the list if the two can be had together.  I will be running the new “Windtunnel” intake manifold, with an Edelbrock 1406.  Have dual exhaust with FlowMaster 40’s and heat-riser delete modified manifolds on her now, that sound great even with the stock 2bbl.  Otherwise stone stock engine.

Maybe Gary P will pipe in with cam choices and sources.

Email Gary P.  Ask him for the baby dual quad cam like he sent me ( Jason Rhoades). I'm running manifolds stock single 4 intake 323 gears on 235-70-15 tires and I'm wishing I had less rpm at hi way speed but on a trip to the Mopar nationals I got 17 mpg.  I wheel dyno'd my car and peak torque was realized before the guy started recording the dyno. (2000 rpm) and only dropped 50 ft lbs by 4200 rpm. That gentlemen is a flat torq curve

Yes I did porting on the intake and heads no I did not upsize the valves yes I did put a 800 cfm carter avs carb on it with a 2" spacer  it's in a 67 valiant yes a light car but very fun. And it sounds great idling with chamber mufflers and 2-1/4 exhaust

OK, my engine builder now has time for my poly. My Dart is going to be a driver. We have plans for things like coast-to-coast trips in it, etc. So while I would like to wake it up a bit, performance is secondary to economy.

The engine we’re using was built a long time ago according to the calendar, but not long ago according to the odometer on the car it came from. Ran very smooth with no sign of smoke at all, so we’re not anticipating having to get into pistons, etc.

What recommendations does anyone have for a cam? If we can wake it up a bit, and improve mileage, that would be great. It’s a factory 4-bbl motor, going to be running the original steel 4-bbl intake. Stock manifolds, full dual exhaust with “bottles” (look like Cherry Bombs, use non-restrictive baffles). Sticking with the stock rear end. I do not know what gears are in it, but it “wakes up” around 35 MPH, and pulls good from there on up. Part of that lack of bottom end pull is due to the 275/60/15’s on the rear, but I’m good with that. I don’t need to spin tires off it, or impress anyone light-to-light. I’m sure that the resulting ratio is going to equate to better highway mileage.

Also, I’m finding mixed answers to gear drive questions on the ’Net. Can anyone confirm that there is a gear drive set-up available for the poly? I know some people don’t like the noise, but I don’t mind it. I would like to go that way if I can and it’s not a fortune.

My engine guy is a very knowledgeable guy, but I’m going to have to have some ideas of my own going into this build. He builds performance engines way beyond what I’m looking for for my Dart, so I know I’ve got my work cut out form me not letting him turn it into some pavement pounding 400+ HP beast. As fun as that might be, I don’t want to be footing the fuel costs on a cross-country trip….  :P

Thanks,

Ray
