Re: Dang - I did it again

Rich,
The '63 valve body would originally have had the rooster comb (manual valve detent lever) with one prong.  The prong actuated the neutral start switch when the valve body rooster comb/manual valve was in the neutral position.  This rooster comb will have a 1/4" hole to accept the solid pushbutton cable adapter, and is illustrated in your photos "2013-07-16 LeRoar driveshaft & trans adj 015.JPG" that has the annotation "65", and "2014-04-02 LeRoar trans and pushbuttons comparisons 002.JPG". annotated "63".  To be clear, the photo marked "65" illustrates a '62-3 style pushbutton setup.

The '65 valve body will have the rooster comb (manual valve detent lever) with two prongs, as illustrated in the remaining photo, "2014-04-02 LeRoar trans and pushbuttons comparisons 010.JPG".  The two prongs actuate the neutral start switch; one for the neutral position, and one for the new-for-'64 park position  This rooster comb will have a 3/16" hole to accept the spring loaded column and console cable adapter.

As you're experiencing, a lot of mixing-and-matching has gone on the last 50 years, and there is much confusion about what fits what.  In addition, many parts have been altered (drilling the 3/16" hole in the column/console lever out to 1/4") over the years, so you really have to watch closely.  I know there are good photos of these parts somewhere on here (Gary, little help? :P) that should help clarify, but the photos you supply illustrate the differences well.

I'll pull some parts this weekend to verify but you should be able to use the '64-'65 (two prong) style valve body in a pushbutton equipped car, but you cannot use a '62-'63 (single prong) style valve body in a '64-65 column or console equipped car. IIRC LeRoar is a pushbutton car, so you should be good either way.  The spring loaded '64-65 adapter will capture the '62-63 style cable end.  Essentially everything is "same-same" except the '64-65 column or console valve body just never gets moved to the "Park" position since the button shifter only travels as far as reverse.

The real problem presents itself when the '62-63 pushbutton valve body is installed in a console or column equipped car and the shift lever is moved beyond the reverse position... the valve body cannot accommodate that additional motion.  Unfortunately the '64-65 cable adapter will capture and retain the '62-63 style cable end, but is not able to accomodate the overtravel motion afforded by the wider cable end groove.

If there's anything I can do to help give me a buzz - 888-476-1210.

I was trying to get the pushbuttons adjusted and just wanted to check one more thing.  I popped the pan off my original trans in addition to the new trans in LeRoar.  I had always heard the "rooster comb" was different but it was the same on my new '65 trans as the freebie '63 trans I have on hand.  It turns out my trans is different!!!!!  I do need to swap out the "rooster comb".

Back to the drawing board again.  All I have to figure out is how to swap them out.??? Here are some pictures for comparison.  The pushbutton trans uses a double tipped rooster comb and the '63 and '65 both have a single point. ??   I wonder why the '63 isn't like mine?

The first pic is my original '64 trans. The second is the new '65 trans. The last is the spare '63.
