It is because of that difference in the 360 front and rear seal/front timing cover, being bigger than those of the 273/318LA/340 to accommodate the larger main bearings.

http://www.1962to1965mopar.ornocar.com/poly318_1.html shows that the poly 318 oil pan will fit on a 340.
For some reason, the information then ( 2001) was it will not on the 360 though. I don't know why.
