RE: Need a refresher on sealing intake manifold

What worked on my Poly might not work for an engine with a valley pan.  You ask 10 different sources and get 10 different answers when it comes to gaskets and sealing.  Everyone has their tried and true method.  You can find long threads on the ‘net all about sealants.

I struggled for a year to seal the pan on a turbo 400.  First with a chrome pan, then a cast aluminum B&M you would think would be easy to seal.  What finally did it was Permatex anaerobic sealer and a hand made gasket.  Prior to that I tried everything from rubber, cork and an expensive composite gasket.  Permatex aviation sealer, RTV with and without a gasket.... Think I even failed with right stuff on the chrome pan - chrome is slippery!  Some of the methods several times, lost count!  Think I had it sealed with the anaerobic sealer and no gasket, and just didn’t realize the fill tube started seeping again.  Been dry for a couple months now, knock on wood!

When I pulled the timing cover off that same engine with the turbo 400 (472ci Cadillac engine I have in a ’53 Chev COE).  I used Permatex Right Stuff to replace the front rubber seal, to avoid dropping the pan.  Hyomar on the paper gaskets.  That combo worked great there too.

Jim,

I am looking forward to the answers you get to your question.

It seems simple but I had an oil leak into the two rear left cylinders due to a valley pan leak that pulled oil from the lifter valley directly into the intake of the cylinders.  No leak on the outside I could find but I found oil on the plugs when I changed them.  When I pulled the intake I could see where it was leaking.

I'm sealed now but still not sure of the best way.

I am kind of surprised this is such a mystery.  Perhaps it is just that I know I can be rather annoying when it comes to details, but this week I talked to Edelbrock, Hughes Engines, and traded emails with a Technical Consultant at Permatex (after reading Ricky's Hylomar thoughts).  Well, I got three different and rather squishy answers.  Maybe I am making too big a deal of this?  I've sealed up Bowtie intakes in my sleep and never had an issue...
