Way to go, Neal! The hot plate was a stroke of genius, a great way
to get just enough heat right where it was needed without
overheating the bearing.
Always remember that there's more than one way to skin a cat.
Unfortunately, the cat won't enjoy any of 'em. :-D

Well, I over-rode all my superior officers methods and
used a hotplate and a freezer and they went together in a
snap with a decent sized framing hammer. You guys all seem
to have air power and I don't. I was originally trying it
with spacers and a ratchet and that just kept cocking the
stud in the hole. Last night I put all the studs in the
freezer. This morning I just put out a hot plate and laid
the axle on the table and got the flange warm, pulled the
studs from the freezer one by one, and they went right
together with a couple good love taps. Amazing. The bearing
didn't even get hot, I worked fast enough that the axle
shaft never really got that warm,
This baby might run this weekend. We have been having
gorgeous Indian summer days and I was looking forward to a
nice long shakedown cruise, but of course it looks like the
weathers gonna shift today to good old Oregon rain.
