Re: 318 Poly rocker adjusters

Nick,
That's a beautiful engine you have there! Are those adjusters the Crane ones from Summit that Gary is recommending? The lock nuts seem a little beefier on yours. A friend of mine is using a set of the Crane ones on his built 360. He warned us to be careful not to over-torque them, as the nuts are so hardened that they will break easily. He said he trashed a set of them before realizing the torque should only be around 10 to 20 ft-lbs.

Dan,

Here's a photo of the adjusters with lock nuts added to the Poly head rocker arm.

Subject: 318 Poly rocker adjusters

This just slightly off topic as the 318 poly is in my cousin's '66 Coronet, but is still relevant to any '62 to '65 poly.

I'll address this straight to the man: Gary P. , but anyone else with suggestions please chime in.
(Gary, Travis Peterson is my cousin. I was the one helping him with the build last month.)

Question: What can we do with these old loose things without tearing the engine apart to remove the heads?

We tried some locktite on them and they'll still be loose and ticking after a 10 minute drive. They didn't seem to mind the stock cam and solid lifters, but the higher lift hydraulic cam and lifters are really working them loose... and quickly.

I imagine a new set of OEM adjusters would be an improvement, but they don't seem to be a very reliable design. I love the aftermarket rockers I've seen for these, where the entire shaft of the adjuster is threaded and has a slotted top to secure them with a screwdriver while the nut is jammed onto the rocker arm. Can those style adjusters be purchased alone and thread into the original rockers, or are they only available with the complete (and expensive) rocker set?

I've even considered trying to machine some old originals into something similar to the above mentioned.

Other than this one problem, his car is running great!

Thanks,
