I have an Autometer electronic speedometer in my 63 SF. Typically there is a pulse generator that goes in the transmission where the speedometer cable attaches. The speedometer reads the pulses and translates it to miles per hour. There is a very simple calibration that sets the speedometer, changing gear ratio or tire sizes is not a problem, simply recalibrate the speedometer. HOWEVER There is not a pulse generator for my Borge Warner T-10 transmission available. I made an adapter and put the pulse generator on the end of the speedometer cable under the dash, it works fine. I do have another unit that I have not attached. It is a GPS pulse generator. It senses your speed just as a standard GPS unit does however it just sends out pulses to the speedometer. Now that you have asked the question I need to get it out and connect it. If you are interested I will let you know how it works. I have not seen an electronic speedometer that uses the magnets on the drive shaft however I'm sure they work just fine, just older technology. Some of the cruise controls use magnets on the drive shaft and accurately send the speed data back to the control unit. I have a manual transmission, I am able to use the pulses off of the coil for my cruise control. Please feel free to ask more questions however a call to one of the gauge companies like Autometer will get you current and accurate information. Take Care Dennis C.
