65 Coronet brake pedal spring question

My brake lights and tails lights stopped functioning due to a blown fuse.  Since fuses don't generally blow without a good reason, I attempted to find out why.  This was actually easy:  there is a spring attached to the brake pedal to, apparently, pull it back up all the way thus turning off the brake lights.  This spring was touching the contact for the brake light switch.  Not good.  Also, the spring was attached at the other end to a wrapped set of wires.  I find it hard to believe the Chrysler engineers would design it this way.  So my questions are, is this spring a real part, or some previous owner's hack job, and if it is real, where is it supposed to attach?  A picture would be wonderful.  Without the spring, my brake lights stay on constantly.
