The original scan was set to printer specifications. It was about 2MB. When the 2 replies followed with the same picture still as an attachment the cumulative result was a 6MB download, thus a nearly 30 minute dial-up download for all 3. 

So if anyone replies to a message with an attachment just take a second and delete that attachment from your reply. That should help.

There are also techniques and settings on the scanner to make the image for email or web instead of printing. The resulting file is much smaller in size.  

Or run the original photo scan through  re-sizer software like http://www.webresizer.com/ and send the optimized-for-web image as the attachment.
