Re: 65 Coronet no longer charging well

With engine running put a voltmeter across the battery.  It should read @ 14 volts.  Turn engine off and retest, battery only voltage should be lower maybe 12 - 13 volts.  You could also turn on the lights for a few seconds first to remove any surface charge.
Also suggestion to check for draw on the battery is a good way to eliminate problems other than the battery, alternator, & voltage regulator.

Take the battery out and have it charged up completely and checked. If it is bad you will get false readings on the alt.

Subject: 65 Coronet no longer charging well

I have an aftermarket voltage gauge that has already read on the order of 14 volts.  Last week it started reading 11.  Today, I had a dead battery.  How can tell which of the components in this path are bad?  I'm guessing I have, as possible points of failure, the alternator, voltage regulator, some mysterious wiring issue, something else.  Could a bad battery cause this?  What steps should I take to narrow things down?  Any advice appreciated.
