Take the battery out and have it charged up completely and checked. If it is bad you will get false readings on the alt.

Subject: 65 Coronet no longer charging well
I have an aftermarket voltage gauge that has already read on the order of 14 volts. Last week it started reading 11. Today, I had a dead battery. How can tell which of the components in this path are bad? I'm guessing I have, as possible points of failure, the alternator, voltage regulator, some mysterious wiring issue, something else. Could a bad battery cause this? What steps should I take to narrow things down? Any advice appreciated.
