RE: Premium vs. Regular gas

Dave,

My 0.02 cents worth.

My recollection of when I was in Canada two years ago is that your systems are exactly the same as ours. Here in Australia leaded fuels have been phased out for quite a few years now. The best remaining fuel to use in a fifty year old car is a regular (about 82-85 octane) Unleaded Petrol (ULP) together with an after-market upper cylinder lubricant, which you can buy at any fuel stop and squirt into the tank in the appropriate proportions. It is also possible to have your old car’s valves, valve guides etc converted to run on ULP but why would you bother.

High octane ULP is not recommended (or of any use) for old cars, and still needs lead replacement additives.

Ethanol additives (which we use a lot) are also not recommended for old cars.

Regards,

Colin Wolf

Hi Cory,
Thanks for raising an excellent question and I look forward to hearing group feedback on this.

My two cents is that I buy premium for my older cars because my mechanic suggested it. He wasn't focused on performance at all (actually), but on engine longevity if I recall correctly. A quick Google search came up with this:

Curious whether or not this makes sense to the rest of the list serve.

Hey all.  A short while back there was a discussion about higher octane gas and how it's suppose to make your car perform better.  Well I'm here today to say that is utter B.S.  I put 3/4 of a tank of premium in my 65 Polara.  The tank was pretty much bone dry, so it was like 98% premium fuel in the tank.  Premium gas in Canada is 91 octane regular is 87.  I've got a mildly built 440 in the car with a 25 gallon tank (95 litres).

I figured, as per the discussion here, the higher octane would make my car perform at least a little better.  I'm saying NO WAY!!  Took it out for a good drive today and there was absolutely no difference in performance whatsoever.  Needless to say I was a little miffed.

So I guess in a long winded way I'm asking everybody on this list if they got the same outcome when trying premium gas vs. regular gas?  After this little experiment I will NEVER buy premium again.  Especially at 15 cents per litre more.  That's 57 cents per gallon more.

Thanks for letting me vent.

Cory
