Yes, in right hand drive markets that was the way the oil filter was mounted... The steering box was fitted to the chassis rail (not on the K-frame, there was no way it would work there) and the oil filter on the block was in the way, it had to be moved. The slant 6 and other V8s had the same kind of treatment in Australia right through into the seventies in our Valiants and the few larger cars assembled here. The Hemi 6, being solely an Australian production engine, had the filter located further forward on the block and so retained a regular screw-on filter cartridge. The mounting of the steering to the frame rail caused a couple of problems. First, it put the Pitman arm arc into the opposite direction to the arc of the steering arms at the wheels, creating a permanent variation in steering geometry as you turned the steering. Second, in Valiants, it led to a major problem with rusting at the steering box mount in the rail. -- -- Please address private email -- email of interest to only one person -- directly to that person.
