You can also use a large wetstone and flatten it out, but if it's to warped, getting it flat would take a month of Sundays.... Personally, I'd go with the gasket. Good luck

OK,, I feel like an idiot even bringing this up.  I'm having a hell of a time getting my thermostat housing to seal up on my 383.  The housing itself is not true anymore,, I took it to work and set it on a granite block used for  precise measurement, and it rocks back and forth quite a bit.  I grabbed one off another engine that sits rock solid (pun intended).  It, however, doesn't seal tight either, and without a gasket will rock from side to side a bit on the pump housing.  I hate to pull it apart and take a chance on a different pump housing. Anyone have any luck with sealing with some kind of gunk like permatex or the like ?  I've never been happy with using anything with gaskets.  Especially something with some pressure behind it.   Can't believe I'm getting my ass kicked by a two bolt housing like this. :-(
