Hello,

Just about any of the RTV gasket sealants will work.  I agree with
making a thin gasket and using a sealant.  There is one out there that
will seal just about anything and make it very hard to get apart next
time "The Right Stuff" by Permatex.  I personally like the half size
caulking tube over the pressurized can.  Either way expensive.

I have used a flat surface with wet dry sandpaper to true up a flange
that is warped.  It is easy, just work it until you just have contact
around the seating surface of the thermostat housing.  I do a figure 8
pattern with the paper wet.
