Chrysler puts many of those boxes in that very place on late model cars. ( Not fun when you are looking for one after a fender bender.)  Other than the possibility of corrosion leakage from the battery I do not see why that would be a bad place.  Maybe put a plastic shield above it, between the battery tray and the control box would be a good idea, one from a modern battery would work, it's a battery tray, just turn it upside down to act as a shield.  Any junk yard would have it for next to nothing.
