How to tell if torque converter is mounted?

Can't post a pic right now, but the tabs on the converter are sticking
out past the tranny's bell housing.

I've put it off and on 20 times and can't get it to go further.  It
feels like it's on the 2nd shaft and doesn't have any play, but those
darn tabs are not looking right as they are out further than the bell
housing.  The body of the torque converter is back in the tranny
though.
