Buy a bag of ice and put it a zip lock bags and put them on the intake.   Take duct  tape and go from air horn to base plate to straighten out the air. Anything you can do to straighten the air will pick you up.  Get the oil to 200 degrees, five more horses.
I built a 340 for less than 2500 parts and machine work, in a 70 Swinger with a 323 gear that goes 12.88 @ 108 with factory manifolds and 14 inch tires.
Try intial timing at 15 with 34 total and in by 2000 .
