If this is a truck engine, Most likely it is low compression. Get a piston on top dead center and with the sparkplug out, take a screwdriver or other small rod amd run it across the top of that piston. . If you can feel a "dish" in the piston top, it is low compression -8.2 or less. Some trucks used a raised water pump but that can be changed.
