The car did lose.It was regularly paired up against the Wickersham A/FX 427 cu.in., 2+2 Mustang fastback driven by Clester Andrews, and sponsored by Wickersham Ford of Orange, Texas. . The Mustang was the closest thing to it, so it was usually a heads up match between the two cars. I remember the A/SA Plymouth running an 11:03, and the Mustang running mid 10's. Not a fair match up, but that's all there was . And on 9" tires on the Plymouth. The Plymouth was a very pretty car when new, but Leo Simpson just treated it as a utilitarian mode of 1/4 mi. transportation.
It wasn't pretty for too many years. Leo Simpson is still living, and I think residing in Orange,Tx.Both cars claimed the long gone Golden Triangle Dragstrip,on Texas Hwy 69 , between Port Arthur, and Beaumont, Tx as their home track.

Interesting. I also have video of the original running down the strip in the day. He was trying to get a copy of that footage from me, but when I discovered what he had done, I never did get back to him on it. He sounds like a really nice guy, but he does not have the original car shown in that photo spread. At one time if a person bought the re-creation, he threw in the original hulk of a car. The Original was too far gone to save, so he cloned one and called it the Texas Rattler. He found an original motor/trans in California, and is suggesting it is, or may be the drive train out of the Texas Rattler. He was wanting $250,000.
