My car restorer friend said "fill it with diesel fuel and leave it.  It will not rust and everything will be clean when you drain it."

Maybe clover the block with the anti-rust salve of your choice; then put some heavy duty plastic under it, then cover it with some breathable fabric so moisture does not get trapped under the cover but dirt is kept out. Then you can periodically lift the cover and add more lube as needed.
