When I sent my trans in, it was because of excessive leaking as well. But mine wasn't as hard to find the problem on as a funky dowel. If the car sat for more than about 8 hours, it would start a steady trickle out of the casing where it was bored for the kick-down. When they dismantled and cleaned the trans, they called me and told me I needed a new casing. So I went to see why. The rod for the kick-down was flopping around, as the bore had worn severely. Interestingly enough, it also work perfectly round. So I had them measure the opening and the rod, and spend a couple of days doing some research. Found a local shop that stocked a brass bushing the perfect size, but longer. So I picked some up, and they cut them down to fit in the casing below the seal. Worked like a charm.....
