Re: Jerky Transmission Engagement

Guys with trans problems,

Take your trans pan off and clean it out good.  If this was never done the trans pan will be full of fine aluminum shavings and the pump pickup is right down in them.

Clean all the goop out of your pan, change the screens and filters that came with the kit (easy with just the pan off) and put about 3 qts. of trans fluid in the trans.  Let the car warm up and adjust the transmission level.

If, after doing this, your trans still doesn't shift right (and doing all the other tips you got), then your trans needs to be rebuilt.

If people do this when they get a new car, first about 15000 miles and again about 40,000 miles your trans will probably outlast your engine.

I have the same problem with my 64 dodge polara push button Torqueflite.
Does not matter if cold or hot and idle at 500-600rpm  or less. Terrible clunk and lurch of car.  Car however shifts very smoothly on the road including step down linkage (passing gear?)
I have checked the u joints and rear end and am convinced it is the transmission.
Do I need to have transmission reworked or live with it?
I also notice that all buttons stay in when pressed, except drive which engages transmission but the button pops back out. Maybe it is just worn, since most used?

this? I'm worried about damage to the u-joints and the transmission
itself.
