one method used a UV polymer which was a liquid and cured with UV laser light. the other was a type of powdered metal composition which was also laser cured.
The MakerBot machines work by building up the object on a table that can move up/down, left/right and forward/back. There's a stationary nozzle that squirts out dots or lines of plastic that cure and harden, kind of like the way you can build up cake frosting by squeezing it out of the decorating bag.
