Re: Disc brakes and front brakes on the rear?... a couple questions (repost)

One of my friends down in FL has a complete brake setup for sale, cheap! All four drums with plenty of thickness, not close to tolerances, with backing plates and all hardware off his B-body for sale; $50!

Let me know of any interest, shoot - good drums are worth that much. I believe he said they were 10x 2 1/2" but they could be the 11's/ I know it doesn't help being vague/uncertain, but for that money let me know and I will e-mail you his phone number; Robert Streit is his name, and he will give you all the correct details.

Thank you,
Gary Pavlovich

None I know of. Hum, if you can't afford a disc swap now then consider a redo of the drum brakes on your car. If you want a dual master cylinder you can swap that in at the same time. Put on new brake lines then too. Will be much less than $600.

The New Yorker used a 11x3 shoe and Newport used a 11x2 1/2 shoe is perhaps what you read?

FWIW, Centric uses the same brake part number for a 1964 New Yorker wagon and a Salon front and back, probably 11x3. They use a different part number for the front and back of other 1964 New Yorkers, 11x3 front and 11x 2 1/2 rear: $26.79 front $21.79 rear in this case.

Thanks,
Gary H.

-------Original Message------- I read somewhere (don't ask where, I don't know - lol ) that the
brakes were different front to back. They must have been thinking of
the Newport, which, according to the service manual, has narrower rear
brakes. Another thing that bolstered my belief that the brakes were of
a different size is that the front shoes are $10 more than the rears.
Could it be that they are indeed different in some way, or are the
companies like Auto Zone just confused? From the way the manual looks,
the shoes are essentially the same. Any opinions on that?

So, does anyone have an opinion on what WILL fit my car,
disc-brake-wise? Six hundred bucks for a kit is too rich for my blood
right now, considering all the other stuff I have to get done on the
car, like the windshield and the weatherstrip... and paint... and
cleaning up the surface rust... lol

 Thanks!
